Exploring Science and Truth: A Lecture by Gianluca Introzzi

On Saturday, November 30, at 4 PM, the cinema-theater Moderno in Castel San Giovanni will host the next event of the series "Scienza in valle." The speaker will be Gianluca Introzzi, a physics professor at the University of Pavia.

This meeting will focus not on a specific science, but on science itself, discussing its methodology, historical journey, and its relationships with philosophy and faith. The discussion will also address contemporary issues where the authority of scientific disciplines is challenged by a casual use of communicative tools, often prioritizing emotion and personal beliefs over factual truth.

Introzzi will clarify the concept of scientific truth, explaining the distinctions between logical and scientific truths, as well as the historical relationship between faith-based and scientific truths. He will also critique the recent rise of the concept of post-truth, which has been used to question certain scientific findings. Introzzi argues that this is a linguistic mystification, a misuse of rhetoric to support false and unjustified claims that cannot be defended by coherent logical or scientific arguments.

Gianluca Introzzi is an alumnus of the Collegio Borromeo and graduated in Physics from the University of Pavia. After completing his specialization and PhD, he worked in elementary particle physics at Fermilab in Chicago and CERN in Geneva. Currently, he teaches Foundations of Physics and Elements of Modern Physics at the University of Pavia, with interests in the history and foundations of modern and contemporary physics. He is co-author, with Niccolò Guicciardini, of the book Quantum Physics - An Introduction (2007) and editor of a series on modern physics for Carocci publisher.
