Unicoop Firenze's Didactic Woods Project Cultivates Environmental Literacy in Tuscan Schools

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

The Unicoop Firenze Didactic Woods initiative continues its mission to ground primary education in direct engagement with the natural world, transforming school grounds into living laboratories for biodiversity and sustainability. Now in its fifth year since launching in 2021, this program integrates cultural enrichment, ecological learning, and community involvement through an experiential model that moves classroom instruction outdoors.

Students actively participate in cultivating these spaces by planting indigenous flora, such as linden trees, which forges a tangible link to the life cycles within their local ecosystem. This hands-on methodology aims to embed environmental responsibility into the daily experience of the children, moving beyond abstract concepts. The project’s expansion since 2021 has been significant, establishing a total of 68 didactic woods across 31 Tuscan municipalities.

This extensive footprint has successfully engaged approximately 8,500 children across over 340 classes in practical activities designed to illuminate the interconnectedness of life. The resulting forest garden serves as a versatile cultivation area where students conduct sensory investigations, learning to interpret the subtle rhythms of the seasons and nature's delicate balance. This approach champions active participation and mutual care, fostering a sense of communal belonging among the young participants.

The success of the initiative underscores a growing recognition that genuine learning flourishes when it mirrors the organic processes of growth found in nature. The project acts as a catalyst, demonstrating how local cooperative action can nurture the next generation's capacity to harmonize with their environment. The meticulous planning, including the selection of native species for ecological resilience, ensures these didactic woods become enduring assets for environmental education.
