Portugal Launches 'Finance for the Future' Board Game to Boost Financial Literacy Across All Ages
Edited by: Olga Samsonova
A significant development in promoting widespread financial acumen has emerged in Portugal through a new partnership between the Nova SBE Finance Knowledge Center and Science4You. The collaboration introduced the board game 'Finanças para o Futuro' (Finance for the Future), an educational tool specifically designed to engage individuals across a broad spectrum, from nine to ninety-nine years old. This innovative game aims to transform the acquisition of essential personal finance management skills into an enjoyable and interactive experience.
Through gameplay, participants are guided to grasp concepts such as responsible credit use, astute investment strategies, and the critical differentiation between needs and wants. Miguel Ferreira, the Academic Director overseeing Nova SBE's 'Finanças para Todos' initiative, stated that the core mission is to simplify intricate financial principles into concepts that are readily accessible to every generation. Filipe Ramos, CEO of Science4You, reinforced the partnership's commitment to elevating the learning process into a high-quality, shared family activity, viewing the integration of play and learning as a potent catalyst for habit formation.
This game launch extends the reach of the broader 'Finanças para Todos' program, which already offers complimentary instruction to Portuguese families on achieving sustainable budgeting and making economically conscious choices. Since its inception, the sustained effort has successfully equipped over 6,000 individuals with these vital skills, with an additional 2,500 participants expected to join during the current October training cycle. This systematic approach reflects a growing global trend toward employing creative, practical strategies to cultivate deeply ingrained, applicable learning behaviors in finance.
Research into educational technology supports this methodology, indicating that game-based learning platforms focused on financial simulations often improve long-term retention rates significantly compared to traditional instruction. Similar educational simulations have reportedly demonstrated up to a 40% increase in participants' confidence in making complex financial decisions within six months of engagement. The introduction of such tools is viewed as a vital, proactive mechanism for shaping a more resilient economic landscape where informed decision-making becomes the standard.
