Lidl's 'Unbeatable Class' Set for 2025 Return to Promote Planetary Health Diet Awareness in Schools
Edited by: Olga Samsonova
The educational initiative led by Lidl, known as 'Turma Imbatível' or 'Unbeatable Class,' is scheduled to resume in 2025. This program aims to equip first-cycle students with fundamental knowledge about dietary choices that support both personal health and the planet's ecological balance. The initiative reflects a growing global recognition that individual nutrition and environmental sustainability are closely connected, extending the focus beyond simple nourishment to encompass broader environmental stewardship.
A key feature of this year's curriculum is the 'Patrulha Planetária' or 'Planetary Patrol.' This engaging component utilizes anthropomorphic food characters, including Fausto the Bean and Margarida the Corn Cob, who will visit schools. These characters will translate the complex principles of the Planetary Health Diet into accessible and engaging lessons for young learners. This early exposure to sustainable living concepts is intended to cultivate a more harmonious long-term relationship between future generations and the natural world.
The educational foundation for the program is the Planetary Health Diet, which aligns with the EAT-Lancet framework. This model seeks to balance the necessity of promoting human health, particularly by reducing chronic diseases, with the critical need to operate within the Earth's ecological limits and conserve essential natural resources. Nutritionist Patrícia Costa Moura is serving as the program's ambassador, developing didactic materials such as notebooks and posters that visually explain the environmental impact associated with different food selections, thereby empowering educators and students.
The program incorporates a tangible incentive structure to reinforce learning outcomes: the top-performing classes will receive exclusive site visits to Lidl suppliers. This direct exposure to the food supply chain offers students an unfiltered view of where their food originates, fostering a deeper appreciation for the processes involved. This practical element supports Lidl's international commitment to promoting Conscious Eating practices across its operations.
This undertaking is a collaborative effort involving several key Portuguese organizations. Partners include the Natureza Portugal Association (ANP | WWF) and the Directorate-General for Education (DGE), signaling a unified commitment to ecological literacy. This partnership between a major retailer, an environmental advocacy group, and a governmental education body suggests a shared societal view that fostering a healthy population requires a multi-sectoral approach.
