Karlovy Vary Region Invests 1.5 Billion CZK in Art and Design School Modernization

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

The Karlovy Vary Region is undertaking a significant revitalization of its renowned Secondary School of Applied Arts for Ceramics and Glass. This ambitious project, with a total budget of 1.5 billion Czech Koruna, involves the comprehensive renovation of a historic building dating back to 1923 and the construction of a new, modern facility.

A substantial 85% of the funding for this endeavor is being provided by the Just Transformation Operational Program, a European initiative aimed at supporting regions undergoing economic transitions. The project is structured in two phases. The first phase includes the reconstruction of the existing historical building and the erection of a new, separate structure, with completion anticipated by September 2027, followed by a trial operation period. The second phase, beginning after the completion of the first phase and trial operation, will focus on demolishing outdated annexes and integrating the new and historical buildings. The entire project, including final approvals, is expected to be completed in 2029.

The modernized campus will feature state-of-the-art classrooms and workshops, an auditorium, two galleries (one housing a distinguished porcelain collection), a gymnasium with spectator seating, a fitness center, and a unique rooftop relaxation area. The school will also offer hobby and educational courses to the public. A key development is the re-establishment of the glassmaking program for the 2026/2027 academic year, in partnership with the globally recognized glassmaking company Moser, which has a heritage dating back to 1857. This collaboration aims to ensure high-caliber training in manual glass production and processing.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2025, with students expected to move into the new learning environment by September 2027. This significant investment highlights a strong commitment to enhancing education and fostering regional development, creating an inspiring atmosphere for students to cultivate their artistic talents. The Just Transformation Operational Program plays a crucial role in supporting such transitions in regions historically dependent on industries like coal, aiming to create new opportunities and mitigate economic change impacts. The partnership with Moser, a brand synonymous with luxury and craftsmanship in glassmaking, will further elevate the school's profile and its capacity to nurture future master artisans.
