Saintes Students Gain Practical Skills Through River and Flora Field Study

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

Progressive educational philosophies are increasingly championing hands-on engagement, moving instruction beyond the confines of the traditional classroom to immerse learners directly within their surrounding world. This shift recognizes that true understanding often blossoms when theory meets direct sensory experience. In the French commune of Saintes, this principle was vividly brought to life as CM1 and CM2 pupils embarked on an intensive outdoor learning expedition focused on environmental integration and local discovery.

The curriculum was intentionally designed to foster a deeper connection with the immediate landscape, treating the natural world as the primary text. Central to this immersive week were dynamic activities, notably kayaking excursions along the historic Charente River. Here, the students actively acquired practical competencies, mastering the nuances of both forward and reverse paddling techniques. Sport educator Cindy Poupaert observed that this shared, calm practice within the aquatic setting served as a powerful mechanism for young participants to navigate and ultimately transcend any initial apprehension regarding water environments, subtly building resilience and mutual reliance among the cohort.

This thoughtfully curated program, a collaboration between the Saintes agglomeration and dedicated educational staff, skillfully balanced the fluidity of water-based activities with rigorous terrestrial exploration. Stéphane Maisonhaute, an animator from the League for the Protection of Birds, guided the terrestrial segment, engaging the children in identifying indigenous plant life, such as the common plantain. Such focused observation sharpens the capacity to notice the subtle yet vital components of local ecosystems.

Feedback from the students underscored the transformative nature of the experience, with many expressing a clear preference for this active fieldwork over conventional desk-based study. Louise, for instance, articulated a newfound appreciation for the sheer beauty and intricate variety present in nature, pointing out species she had never encountered in a textbook. The overarching objective, as articulated by Alexandre Giraud, who coordinates childhood education for the Saintes area, is to cultivate an intrinsic understanding and a corresponding commitment to safeguarding the local ecological heritage. Approximately ten CM1 and CM2 classes from the broader Saintes region benefited from this concentrated period of environmental immersion, effectively transforming the local environment into a living laboratory.
