First Lady Melania Trump has launched the Presidential Artificial Intelligence (AI) Challenge, a national initiative aimed at inspiring students from kindergarten through 12th grade to utilize AI for addressing real-world problems. This program seeks to cultivate AI literacy and innovative thinking among young Americans, integrating technological exploration into the educational system.
The challenge is a key component of President Donald Trump's Executive Order 14179, signed on January 23, 2025, which established an AI Action Plan to enhance America's global leadership in artificial intelligence and promote innovation. Mrs. Trump has emphasized the importance of early AI engagement, drawing from her personal experience with AI-powered audiobooks to illustrate the technology's potential and considerations. Her broader advocacy includes support for the "Take It Down Act," legislation designed to combat non-consensual deepfake imagery and online exploitation, highlighting her commitment to protecting young individuals in the digital space.
The Presidential AI Challenge invites participation across various educational levels, with categories for elementary (grades K-5), middle school (grades 6-8), high school (grades 9-12), and educators. Participants are encouraged to develop AI projects that address local or regional challenges, applying AI tools to practical scenarios. Registration for the initiative opened on August 26, 2025, with project submissions due by January 20, 2026.
Winning teams and individuals can receive prizes of up to $10,000, along with advanced cloud computing credits and a Presidential Award Certificate. The initiative culminates in national finals to be held in Washington, D.C. This program is seen as crucial for developing a new generation of talent equipped for industries increasingly influenced by automation and advanced technologies, thereby maintaining America's competitive edge globally.
