Food Challenge 2025 Aims to Integrate Sustainability and Healthy Eating in Dutch Education

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

The sixth edition of the Food Challenge in 2025 is set to significantly enhance the integration of sustainability and healthy eating principles within the Dutch educational system. Schools have until October 15, 2025, to register for this initiative, which is a collaborative effort involving 13 vocational colleges (mbo) specializing in food and lifestyle sectors.

These vocational colleges, located across seven provinces, are partnering with 23 pre-vocational secondary education (vmbo), practical, and specialized education schools in the northern and central regions of the Netherlands. Through interactive guest lectures, vocational students guide younger learners in preparing sustainable poké bowls and foster an understanding of balanced nutrition using a 'wheel of five' game. Complementing these activities, students participate in farm visits for immersive bootcamps, where they use farm-fresh ingredients to create their own cheese and pizzas, establishing a tangible connection to their food sources.

An impact assessment conducted by the Louis Bolk Institute, a knowledge institute focused on sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and health, has confirmed the program's success. The study indicates a notable increase in students' awareness of sustainability issues directly linked to their participation in the Food Challenge. Furthermore, the challenge encourages healthier lifestyle choices, with students reporting increased physical activity following their involvement. Over half of the participating students particularly enjoy the hands-on food preparation activities, such as making poké bowls and pizzas.

The benefits also extend to the vocational students, who gain valuable practical experience in sustainability and nutrition while honing their presentation and social skills. Their engagement with younger students serves as a significant learning experience and helps promote vocational training enrollment, addressing a recognized shortage of skilled technical personnel in the Netherlands. Organized by LekkerBoer in partnership with vocational colleges and supported by various organizations and local governments, the Food Challenge is prepared for further expansion.

For the 2026 edition, the program will accommodate a maximum of 25 schools, with the registration deadline remaining October 15. Research into similar Dutch nutrition education programs, such as 'Weet wat je eet,' has demonstrated positive effects on students' self-efficacy and attitudes towards healthy, safe, and sustainable nutrition, alongside improvements in specific healthy eating behaviors. The broader Dutch educational landscape also includes initiatives like 'Jong Leren Eten,' supported by the ministries of Agriculture and Health, which aims to enhance food literacy across various educational levels. The Louis Bolk Institute, a key player in research for sustainable agriculture and health, has also been involved in evaluating the impact of such food education programs. The Food Challenge's experiential approach, connecting students directly with the origins of their food and encouraging hands-on creation, cultivates a deeper appreciation for healthy and sustainable choices, fostering a mindset that empowers students to make informed decisions about their well-being and the environment.
