Brenne's Youth Cooperative: Fostering Social Economy Skills for Teens

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

A new initiative in Brenne, France, from July 7th to August 29th, 2025, will engage youth aged 16-18 in a service cooperative. This project aims to introduce them to the world of social and solidarity economy. The program, led by Gatien Catrou, will empower young people to create their own social enterprise from start to finish.

Participants will develop service offerings, prepare quotes and invoices, complete tasks, and learn about the cooperative system. The initiative will take place within the Cœur de Brenne community, with transportation provided for youth from Le Blanc and surrounding areas. Catrou emphasizes the goal of fostering social connections among youth, institutions, and professionals.

The project also aims to be fun and educational, providing valuable experience for resumes. The young participants, called “cooperators,” will be supported by two facilitators and a local committee of youth and economic professionals. The initial phase will focus on establishing the cooperative and defining service offerings based on participant interests.

Services may include garden maintenance, IT support, moving assistance, and general cleaning. From mid-July to the end of August, the cooperative will begin providing services and undertaking projects. At the end of the summer, participants will share the profits earned from their enterprise's services.

Catrou highlights that this initiative offers young people a first experience in the social and solidarity economy. It promotes independence and reinforces values through popular education. This hands-on approach empowers youth while contributing to the local community.
