Bicentennial Schools in Peru: Transforming Public Education with Innovative Infrastructure and Finnish-Inspired Methods

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

Peru's Bicentennial Schools are revolutionizing public education, focusing on collaborative learning and active technology use. By 2025, over 60,000 students will benefit from these spaces designed for dynamic and participatory learning.

With an investment exceeding 5.9 billion soles, the Ministry of Education is implementing an educational model inspired by Finland. This model aims to transform the learning experience for over 118,000 students and 5,000 teachers.

These schools feature flexible classrooms accommodating up to 60 students and two teachers simultaneously, equipped with mobile furniture, interactive whiteboards, and projectors. The design promotes investigation and knowledge building in teams, integrating technology to enhance learning opportunities.

The Bicentennial Schools offer multiple benefits, including a focus on hands-on pedagogy, preparing students for university studies. Continuous teacher training ensures the implementation of innovative teaching strategies. Technical workshops in areas like robotics and textiles strengthen education for work.

The project includes the construction of 75 educational institutions across nine regions and 21 districts of Lima, benefiting approximately 118,000 Peruvians. The Escuela Bicentenario 3080 Peru-Canada, inaugurated on September 17, 2024, exemplifies this effort, serving over 1,800 students.
