Surreal Brick Facade Installation
A playful public installation by artist Alex Chinneck has arrived in London for Clerkenwell Design Week. The installation, titled "A Week at the Knees," features an undulating four-story brick facade. It evokes Chinneck's earlier work, creating a surreal architectural experience.
Located in Charterhouse Square, the installation mirrors the surrounding Georgian architecture with a surreal twist. The bottom of the facade forms an archway, inviting passersby to walk underneath and experience the sculpture from all angles. Chinneck's meticulous attention to detail enhances the illusion, making the structure appear as if it's sliding down.
The sculpture is anchored by a core of repurposed steel from the former American Embassy. It incorporates bespoke bending windows, 7,000 bricks, and other realistic details. Despite weighing 12.6 tons, the facade's shallow depth gives it a surprisingly light and airy appearance.
On display through June, Chinneck's work challenges viewers to engage with architecture in new ways. By transforming architectural elements into art, he highlights the beauty often overlooked in everyday spaces. The installation encourages a fresh perspective on familiar surroundings.
